NEW BOOK ON END-OF-LIFE DOCUMENTARY FILMS
Finland-based film scholar Outi Hakola's new book, "FILMING DEATH," examines how documentaries portray death, dying, hospice care, and assisted dying. The book explores the meaning and practice of documenting end-of-life with filmmakers Tim Wilson, Claudia Tosi, and Edgar Barens.

THE PASSING OF HERKY
It is with a heavy heart that I convey the somber news of the passing of my dear friend, Bertrum Burkett, affectionately known as Herky to many. For those acquainted with my film, "Prison Terminal," Herky served as the natural leader of the hospice volunteers at the Iowa State Penitentiary.

PRISON TERMINAL TOP 13 DOCS ON DEATH & LOSS
In his documentary, filmmaker Edgar Barens shows the raw details of dying in prison. In the Iowa State Penitentiary, inmates are specially trained to deal with death. Rooms in the infirmary become hospice care, allowing inmates to care for the dying. In Prison Terminal, Barens points his lens at the next to go, and presents a genuinely touching story about discarded humanity.

MISFORTUNATE - POSTPONED DUE TO DEATH
Scott Dozier, the subject of Feffer Films' documentary MISFORTUNATE, was found dead in his cell at Ely State Prison, Nevada. NDOC reports he hanged himself at 48. Convicted of first-degree murder, his execution was delayed due to controversy over the drugs to be used.

PRODUCTION CONTINUES ON MISFORTUNATE
Shooting continued in Ely, Nevada, as Scott Dozier's second execution attempt was postponed again. We conducted extensive interviews with Ely residents and key prison officials. The postponement was due to concerns from pharmaceutical companies about the lethal drug cocktail for the execution.
